What is MSG And Why You Should Avoid It?

MSG or monosodium glutamate is the sodium salt of glutamic acid. You may have eaten it or drank it and not even aware of it. MSG is the stuff that is added in many sauces and is a key ingredient in the flavoring powder in instant ramen packets (in some countries this would be the instant noodles).

Why should you avoid MSG?

MSG is salt! And too much salt will lead to high blood pressure. That is the simple answer.

A lot of conspiracy theories have been written regarding MSG but the truth is this chemical agent gives the tasty flavor to the many sauces and instant ramen. I specifically look at the food labels to see the MSG content and I decide if the amount is what I want or is it too much. When buying instant ramens, I go for those that has ‘no added MSG’ labels. I enjoy sushi and sashimi but I minimise the sauce when dipping the fish before eating.

So why should you avoid MSG? Long term consumption of MSG leads to high blood pressure. It is the same as adding too much salt to your food.

Like everything in life, moderation is key.
