Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia is currently experiencing a dengue break.

Dengue is a mosquito borne viral infection and infected persons develop fever, joint aches and pains, head ache, muscle pain and flu like symptoms. Complications of dengue include bleeding and kidney failure among others. The key to preventing dengue infection is preventing mosquito bites. In an outbreak situation, low resourced hospitals can be become overwhelmed quickly with sick people very quickly. Treatment of dengue infection involves confirming the infection with laboratory testing, giving intravenous fluids, medicines to control fever and pain and sick persons may require hospitalization for few days. This means hospital beds may be used up and limited resources for treating sick people may be quickly used up. Health workers may also become whelmed quickly. So being prepared is key to responding to a dengue outbreak.

It has been reported that there was one death from dengue infection during this current outbreak in Yap State but resources maybe running out fast. Authorities in the Federated States of Micronesia are now working towards helping  Yap State to control and contain the dengue outbreak.
